Why Finding Your Voice Is Not About Volume
Have you ever felt like you should be speaking up more, pushing yourself to be more visible, or acting a certain way to be taken seriously? There is a tendency to associate the idea of "finding your voice" with speaking up more, making yourself heard, or stepping into the spotlight. But what if your voice isn’t about volume at all?
For me, finding your voice is about getting clarity in who you are and what you stand for, building self-trust, and expressing yourself in a way that aligns with who you are.
Your Voice is More Than Just Your Words
Your voice isn’t just what you say - it’s how you show up, the impact you have, and the way you communicate in a way that feels natural.
Maybe your strength lies in careful preparation, thoughtful insights, or deep listening. Maybe you express yourself better through writing than speaking on the spot. These are all valid ways of making your voice heard.
Authenticity Over Expectation
Many workplaces reward those who are quick to speak or take up space, leaving quieter professionals feeling like they need to do the same to be successful, even when it doesn’t come naturally. But real confidence comes from understanding your strengths and embracing your natural way of contributing.
Instead of asking, How can I be more visible? try asking:
What do I want to be known for?
How do I express myself best?
What feels most natural and sustainable for me?
When you stop trying to match external expectations and instead refine how you naturally communicate, your presence becomes more powerful.
Clarity Creates Confidence
The more you understand your values, strengths, and what matters to you, the more confidently you can express yourself - whether in meetings, emails, or everyday interactions. Instead of just focusing on how to speak up more, focus on what you want to say and why it matters. When you have clarity, speaking (in whatever form) feels easier.
Consistency Builds Influence
Finding your voice isn’t about a single moment - it’s about showing up in a way that aligns with who you are, over time. When your words, actions, and presence reflect what you stand for, people take notice.
You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to be heard. You just have to show up as yourself, with clarity and intention.
How to Build Quiet Confidence
It’s one thing knowing that you need to show up as yourself but it’s another thing knowing exactly how to go about this. We are so often swept up in the day to day that we don’t give enough time to who we are, who we want to be or where we want to go.
This is the very thing I help quiet professionals with in my new 12 week coaching programme, Quiet Confidence.
