Setting Career Intentions as an Introvert
As we step into a new year, it’s natural to think about what we want to achieve in the year ahead, including in our careers. Personally, I love the newness of January. It’s like a line in the sand where we can set goals and wishes for the new chapter ahead of us. A fresh start.
Yet it can also be really overwhelming. Making grand plans to do ALL the things. And then feeling disappointed when you don’t stick to it.
If the idea of bold resolutions or grand declarations feels overwhelming, and you want to begin the new year more in sync with your quieter, more introverted nature, then setting career intentions can be a much better fit.
Intentions are less about ticking off goals and more about aligning with who you are and how you want to show up in the world. They’re a way to focus your energy and make decisions that feel meaningful and sustainable - not just for January but for the long term.
So, what might setting career intentions look like for you as an introvert? Here are some ideas:
Focus on your strengths
Intentions like “I will lead with my ability to listen deeply” or “I will use my strength in thoughtful problem-solving to bring value” can help you feel grounded and confident.
Honour your quiet nature
Instead of forcing yourself into networking events or meetings where you feel drained, you could set an intention like “I will find one authentic way to connect with others this month” or “I will advocate for my ideas in a way that feels comfortable for me.”
Focus on growth, not perfection
Intentions allow space for progress, like “I will take small, consistent steps toward a role that excites me” or “I will ask for feedback to help me grow in my career.”
The beauty of intentions is that they evolve with you. They provide a compass rather than a rigid map, giving you room to pivot as your needs and circumstances change.
This month, I’ll be sharing tips and strategies to help you craft, refine, and live out your career intentions for the year ahead. Let’s make this a year where you’re seen and valued for who you truly are.
